How to determine when to replace your outer sleeves | Keeping your cards looking beautiful for a long time
share
Have you been putting it off, thinking, "Maybe it's still usable?" Outer sleeves tend to deteriorate faster than they appear, and this directly affects their ability to protect your cards and their appearance. We'll explain how to determine when they need replacing, as well as tips for making them last longer.
Why is it important to replace the outer sleeve?
The outer sleeve is the outermost layer and protects the card from scratches, shocks, moisture, and UV rays. Over time, it can lose transparency, develop small scratches, and have curled edges, which can affect the appearance and condition of the card if left unattended.
Points to consider when determining replacement time
Changes in appearance
- Small scratches and scuffs have increased
- Transparency decreases, and dullness and cloudiness become more noticeable.
- The edges are warped or chipped
Changes in usability
- There is a feeling of something getting stuck when shuffling
- It's difficult to slide and can be difficult to play.
- The surface is sticky
Reduced protection
- Yellowing due to UV rays
- Rippled deformation due to moisture
- Small holes or tears
Different exchange cycles for players and collectors
Please refer to the following guidelines depending on the frequency of use and environment.
User Type | Usage | Recommended replacement cycle |
---|---|---|
Regular tournament and event players | Played several times a week, frequently carried around | Replace the item just before the event and participate with a new one (approximately 1-3 months old) |
Casual Player | Play a few times a month | 3 to 4 months (replace immediately if scratches or cloudiness become noticeable) |
Collector (for display) | Basically don't move | 1-2 years (when yellowing or cloudiness occurs) |
*The above is only a general guideline. The actual replacement period will vary depending on the frequency of use, storage environment, material, etc.
Points to review before exchanging
Compatibility with inner sleeve
The protection and thickness will change depending on whether you combine it with an inner sleeve or a plain sleeve. When replacing the outer sleeve, please also check the condition of the inner sleeve.
Adjusting the storage environment
Even if you replace it with a new one, it will deteriorate faster if placed in a place with strong humidity or UV rays. Avoid direct sunlight and keep the humidity at around 40-60% .
Precautions when using with a loader (clarification of terminology)
If you want to use a magnetic loader or top loader with the outer sleeve attached, be sure to check the compatibility of the size and thickness of each product. Please note that our magnetic loader is compatible with inner sleeves and character sleeves, and we do not recommend using it with an outer sleeve attached.
summary
The outer sleeve is the first line of defense for your cards. By replacing them regularly, taking into account signs of deterioration in appearance or signs of use, you can maintain the beauty and value of your cards for a long time. When participating in an event, make it a rule to replace your outer sleeve just beforehand, and make it a habit to check it regularly on a daily basis as well.
